i recently remembered DickTim Week 2024 is happening very soon and i looked at the prompts again to see if i could get anything out for it and. the Hades & Persephone AU prompt for day 1 has got me really thinking so here's a vague concept i plan to write.

i've been pretty burnt out on modern Hades & Persephone retellings because of how they always seem to fall into the same generic "innocent wide-eyed girl runs from her evil mean mother into the arms of a dark mysterious man because actually she went willingly and chose to marry him" which has gotten repetitive for my tastes. (for clarity i don't care if this retelling is your cup of tea personally, so long as you're not actively trying to rewrite the original myth and claim untrue things about it, if this is your favorite flavor i sincerely hope you enjoy the buffet i just have little interest in it since it feels overdone for me and exhausted of it's supposed commentary atp)

but? but. biblically accurate Hades & Persephone AU has me all kinds of interested. because wait listen so hear me out right. Hades!Dick and Persephone!Tim, obviously. i feel it'd be more loosely inspired by with themes and imagery (though playing with death and nature powers could be interesting, i haven't decided) rather than explicitly making them gods and all. but. something dark and fucked up where Dick and Bruce are especially estranged. maybe to do with Jason's return, maybe to do with them just clashing and having their usual explosive arguments. and Bruce knows the peace needs to be kept, if he and Dick are at odds then everyone starts to pick sides and things just fracture so he needs a peace offering.

and the peace offering is Tim.

Bruce (the stand-in for Zeus) offers up Tim. agrees to have Tim move to Bludhaven and be Dick's... whatever Dick wants him to be. knowing that with the implication comes the likelihood of Dick grooming Tim. and Tim has no real say and is hesitant to put up a real fight. he doesn't want this, he knows what this is going to imply Dick will do to him, but he also knows if he says no things have the possibility to just... fall apart. so he's the unwilling bride, dragged off to the metaphorical underworld (Bludhaven) with Dick, away from his family, his friends, the life he built.

and on the flip side, i think weirdly enough, your best pick for the Demeter stand-in is *Jason*. just, hear me out on that. not necessarily on the side of it being motherly, but on Jason being just estranged enough from the Batfamily to be the one willing to call it out for being bad and wrong and raising bloody hell to get Tim back. maybe it's because Jason wants Tim for himself, maybe it's truly out of a concern for Tim to have autonomy, i'm toying with the idea of it primarily being Tim's POV and him genuinely not knowing which of these is true. (and the truth possibly ends up being a complicated middle ground) and because i like Helena, i think you can use her as the Hekate stand in, the one who strikes a tentative alliance with Jason and tries to go find Tim and bring him back. Tim stuck with Dick, getting groomed and hyperaware of it, possibly even getting fucked the whole time as well, knowing he can't go back without causing massive issues for Dick and Bruce because well, Bruce did promise him to Dick. so he has to adjust his whole life, try to figure out being a vigilante in this new city with Dick breathing down his neck the whole time.

and then much like the ending of the myth, a sort of compromise is struck that's a shaky deal for everyone involved. Tim is put on an essential timeshare, going back and forth between Gotham, where he has friends and family and a support system, then getting dragged right back to Bludhaven with Dick in this brutal cycle that he slowly gets used to and stockholm'd into even liking it. Dick isn't so bad, once he gets used to the quirks of their unbalanced 'relationship'. the sex is even something he can adjust to as well. not quite a happy ending but one that sits in this realistic grey area that becomes Tim's life.

i will write this, eventually, but i don't know if i'll get to it before DickTim Week ends so by posting the idea i'm essentially putting it out into the world so the peer pressure holds me accountable. i just. really like the potential of making Hades/Persephone AUs as fucked up as they can be simply by adhering to the source material and making it a raw story of being stolen away and forced to like this new home you didn't ask for.

also a less fleshed-out aspect of this idea i have ties into Persephone becoming the Queen of the Underworld when she's taken and how the transition from Kore to Persephone could be reflected in Tim. how he makes the best of the worst situation and becomes something far more dangerous and dark when he's in Bludhaven, possibly takes on a new vigilante name/identity and leans into the worst quirks of his personality he tries to tamper because there's no point in not going full tilt Obsessively Weird if he has no choice anyway and it being one small way he takes back his autonomy, and that inevitably making Dick *more* into him, because he gets to see Tim finally just. let loose.

Ice's Petty Gripes with Apollo's Design

Okay so I'm not gone argue, if you disagree, just scroll on or block me. It's not that deep overall.

While his skin isn't as greenish as it usually is with desaturation issues, it still looks flat to me. I've seen that the art style has been updated though, so hopefully this is not an issue by the game release. Giving them a chance 👍🏾

His hair 😭😭 omfg I'm sorry. I just... It reminds me of back when we used to have games that would let you change the skin color of your model (gasp! So inclusive!) but the hairstyles were still limited to white people textures that sat awkwardly. We're past that. It's 2024. This could have been twists, freeform locs, a frohawk, or- my personal favorite, as he's symbolic of the sun at some point- an AFRO! Even a teeny weeny afro with some cute curl definition would have favored his facial structure!

If he'd been literal grey like his brother Ares, or white like his sister Artemis, I wouldn't have cared. But I think my general issue is the lack of commitment to defining Black features in art, and I think this one was just the straw that broke the camel's back for me lmao (I was already mad about Patroclus, but I overlooked it, kinda thought they'd learn from that).

We are not white; you have to consider that when you're designing us. We aren't painted the exact same way. We don't look like white people; lmao an entire sociological construct was invented to drive that point home in every aspect of our lives, but somehow we forget as soon as it's time to put paint to paper? And Supergiant is not some lone fanartist or crowd funded team. These are creators that have made excellent games and have excellent designs for the majority of their characters!

Now this is not me saying that they're bad people. They're not. I adore Hades! I just... I personally feel I have the right to expect better from games atp. This design is mid, from people capable of producing heat. I shouldn't have to settle for "well, at least they're Black" in 2024. And so I'm not 🤷🏾‍♀️ If you're gonna do a Black/Brown character, wholly commit to the design! I feel this way about EVERY medium that drops Black characters, in more ways than one (I have an entire blog about it lmaooo).

So yeah, it's not *that* deep on its own, I'm just not bout to call something hype when it's not. But I'm also not gone stop anybody else from playing or anything lmao.

Being a child of Athena was probably one the the most exciting things to ever happen to you.

Ever since you were a kid, you've been at the top of your class. Mostly because your dad was a book and math nerd, but because you wanted to make him proud. You hated when you couldn't understand something, or you couldn't answer something that seemed so simple. You were a perfectionist, and it was something you loved and hated about yourself.

So, when you were claimed after winning you first Capture The Flag (downright, the coolest way to get claimed,) you bet that you were happy. Now you had a reason to act the way you did. The Athena kids were happy, you were happy, it was a win-win.

Expect for, what it seemed to be, Annabeth.

and yes, I'm talking about Annabeth Chase. Blonde haired, Grey eyed, Counselor of the Athena cabin and Hero of Olympus—didn't seem to want a new camper in her cabin. Which at first, it hurt your feelings. Was it too much to ask for some love? but after thinking about it, why care? sometimes people aren't going to like you, and that's okay.

But deep, deep down, you knew that it was more than that. It was bad enough that you were a perfectionist, but a people pleaser too?

You try not to think about the possibility of that being a thing. By doing what you might ask? sword fighting. It gave you a reason to fight the Ares kids (who always has something to say about how you looked,) and forget about your issues.

But currently, you were getting your butt handed to you by an Ares kid. Originally, you were supposed to be sparring with a whole different camper, but they ended up backing out.

The older camper held the sword to your neck. "What are you going to do now, hm?" He mused. "not like I expect you of all people to be able to beat me anyways."

"What in Hades is that supposed to mean?" You clapped back, your curls falling in front of your face. "implying that I can't fight?"

"You know exactly what I mean."

Your eyes narrowed. "Do you ever shut up?" you asked. You knew what he would say, but starting an dumb argument would give you more time to think.

"Nah, I like to talk—" Before he could finish, you grabbed his arm, twisted it so his sword fell, and caught it. "Now, next question: do you give up or are you going to keep on getting tricked?" You asked, wiping your bloody nose with your free hand.

"like I'd ever let an Athena's kid beat me.." He started, but quickly stopped when he looked over.

There stood a not-so-happy (and a slightly impressed) Annabeth. She had her arms crossed and she was staring daggers at the Ares kid.

"Actually, you know what? I give up. Take your win or whatever." He said quickly. You moved his sword from his neck and dropped it.

"Well that was quick, guess it's just another point for me-" You looked to the side and saw Annabeth. "Holy sh—I mean, hey Annabeth." You said as you took off your helm and held it.

"You know, the strategy you just used was a pretty good one." She said as she walked up to you.

"Really? you think so?" you asked in a surprised tone. She bent down to your level and placed a hand on your cheek. "Yeah, I do." She smiled, running her fingers over the cuts on your face. "Does it hurt when I do that?"

"Not really." You shrugged, leaning into her touch.

"Good. I don't wanna hurt my little warrior. " She took her hand off your cheek. "Anyways, I'm bring you to the infirmary. I'm pretty sure you should be a lot more tired than you are currently." Before you could say anything in protest, she picked you up and threw you over her shoulder.

"Hey! I did not agree to this!" you said in-between giggles. Who knew that Annabeth had a soft side, am I right?

I feel like atp its pretty common knowledge that blue fire is hotter than red fire. So why does Idia's hair technically get.. less hot when hes angry? Its because when he is more stressed/angry he accumulates more blot, which cools down the flames. Sort of like adding a little bit of water to a fire. it just makes me sad bc i don't want to be a hater or pin everything on the queer author- i've heard their other books are good!- but also a lot of the stuff i dislike about tsats is explicitly stated to be oshiro's writing/influence. and they talked about how much research they did on the other books for this! but. the hades dream sequence. nico claiming to not have dream powers. the tartarus flashback overall was bad and underwhelming, but also nico saying he missed his "dear friend jason" even though they'd literally never met atp. picking the stymphalian birds for will bc "heracles killed them with archery"- yeah, but in that exact same myth he initially keeps them at bay by making a lot of noise! guess who has a sonic whistle

I've been thinking about it constantly but in terms of stuff I haven't already said I don't think I have toooo much?

Like I said I wanna include Hades and Homer, and I've been imagining both of them as avatars of The End in different ways.

Hades is a taxidermist (it was between that and a mortuary person but my partner voted for taxidermist so that's where I ended up) but the way he does the whole fear generation thing is like. Appearing sort of like as an omen of death. I'm horrible with articulating my ideas lmao I've just been imagining him standing there menacingly and that putting the fear of death into people for the most part.

As for Homer. I've been imagining a reanimated corpse situation with him, sort of like the Jane Doe cadaver from Georgie's statement. As for what he does...I don't have specifics on that one. Obviously there's the option to also have him do the whispering thing but idk.

I also figured out the Critic (who for reference I refer to as Dice- I think the fandom settled on Anton but Dice is too firmly cemented in my brain atp)! He is an avatar of The Vast :] big space fan that guy. He is going to toss you straight into the exosphere /j

gillion and chip as hadestown!orpheus and eurydice

ok so i was listening to hadestown again because i love it dearly and i am still desperately trying to cope with ep 101 and i was like haha. chip and gillion as orpheus and eurydice. because yknow in the context of the actual myth you could compare it to the whole feywild arc and whatnot.

but then i listened to it more (more than halfway through the first song) and i realized it’s way better (worse) if you have it the other way around with chip as hadestown eurydice and gillion as hadestown orpheus. (there’s another way to read it too but we’ll get to that because it’s a bit more convoluted since. well it’s basically a game theory atp)

i’m going through this song by song because i have never felt happiness or peace ever

Road to Hell: ok so ignoring the gods for now. road to hell does eurydice a little dirty so for this song it’s just orpheus i’m talking about, but hermes describes him as a muse’s son and touched by the gods themselves. ok cool whatever so what Any Way the Wind Blows: “eurydice was a hungry young girl / a runaway from everywhere she’d ever been”? like yeah ok sure cool (side note? “ain’t nobody gonna stick around when the dark clouds roll” and  for chip, mr. constantly both afraid his crew will stay and will leave anytime something bad happens and who literally lost his family in the hole in the sea? silly.) plus for orpheus, “and this poor boy wore his heart on his sleeve / you might say he was naive to the ways of the world / but he had a way with words”. that’s my boy right there

Come Home with Me: most of this is just very funny (”oh, a liar and a player too?”) but “why would i become his wife?” “because he’ll make you feel alive” kinda got me a little tbh. and there’s also the ongoing theme of orpheus working on something to fix the balance of the world, which he can do because he’s touched by the gods.

Livin’ it Up on Top: most of this i’ll talk about when i talk about the gods because woo boy that should be a post of its own with how much psychological damage it caused me. but “there was a girl who had always run away / you might say it was in spite of herself / that this young girl decided to stay” for chip?

All I’ve Ever Known: yeahhhhhhhh nothing real metaphorical about this one. fnc shippers come get yalls juice ig idk that’s really all for that one

A Gathering Storm: title aside, the whole thing is eurydice being concerned about the practical way they will survive the winter while orpheus works on his song to make the world right again.

When the Chips are Down: hand to god i did not think about that pun until now. but yeah this whole song really sold it for me. “help yourself (to hell with the rest), even the one who loves you best / take if you can (give if you must), ain’t nobody but yourself to trust / aim for the heart (shoot to kill), if you don’t do it then the other one will” are interesting enough to think about with chip because basically his whole thing is not turning out like that but there are still some times (mainly early on) that he gets a little closer to those ideas. finally, “cast your eyes to heaven / you get a knife in the back”. put your life in the hands of anything but yourself and you get fucked over.

Wait for Me intro: alright one god i can pitch right now. hermes with the “so, just how far would you go for her? you got a ticket? yeah, i didn’t think so. course there is another way, but nah, i ain’t supposed to say.” being as mean as possible rn? hermes as niklaus would work as absolutely unfortunate as that is. which also makes the “ain’t no compass, brother, ain’t no map” line in the actual song even funnier since it’s hermes describing how to get to the underworld to save eurydice.

Wait for Me: the fates hit orpheus with the self doubt and worry that essentially he’s not the chosen one, part one. don’t really need to explain that one

Way Down Hadestown (Reprise): now hear me out on this. because hades’ whole bit is deals for people’s souls. eurydice signs a deal to give him her soul in exchange for not starving to death, and this song is her realizing what that really means and trying to defend it. which i will admit, makes it seem like it would work for niklaus too. but we’ll come back to that

If it’s True: “is this how the world is? to be beaten and betrayed and then be told that nothing changes?” now this one got me a little, between gillion’s ‘my last sin’ speech and what he said to jay in the block.

Intro to Wait for Me (Reprise): “it’s a trap?” “it’s a trial.” hermes explaining to orpheus and eurydice the conditions of them being allowed to leave. at the end of the day, according to hermes, their success rides on whether they trust each other and themselves. arguably the most recurring theme of riptide.

Doubt Comes In: orpheus doubting that he actually has the power to bring her back, thinking he has been tricked or is too weak to do it. in gillion’s own mind, his fatal flaw is not knowing if he believes he can be the chosen one or protect his friends. and for orpheus, he couldn’t.

a good amount of the songs are missing because i haven’t talked about hades and persephone yet. they’re. a separate issue

As a greek mythology nerd i despise lore olympus with a burning passion DISNEYS HERCULES IS MORE ACCURATE ATP. Why is Hades never portrayed right. Well ig im just really grateful for pjo and Hades game. Also apollo. Why. Just why. Ik everyone is shitting in greek mythology but apollo is 100% asshole no single good deed. Also Ares is like off putting?? He isnt like that but i cant put a finger on whats wrong with him. Demeter is not abusive as depicted. She may be unreasonable but abusive is a stretch idk. Its too much.

In conclusion, yes greek gods ars absolute assholes but this thing hurts my soul. If you wanna make them have morals at least be consistent because HOW is apollo more horny/shitty than ZEUS. Go read percy jackson, play Hades, watch Hadestown or Epic the Musical. Or even better, read the original text. Or summaries on yt theres some great channels out there. But no lore olympus.

But to answer your question!! I have played quite a few other games. Some of my favourites have been Hollow Knight, Hades, Subnautica, Dredge, Sunless Sea, and House Flipper!! There’s a few more, but those are the ones I liked the most :> I also play Minecraft but only socially. I cannot for the life of me play it alone 😭 What games do you like, Zu? :D
